Cinematographer Linus Sandgren is bringing back vintage film formats like VistaVision to modern cinema, sparking a debate about whether technical quality or storytelling should be the priority. As Nollywood continues to evolve, do you think our industry should focus on adopting these expensive global cinematic standards, or should we stick to our strengths in digital storytelling and local accessibility? Let's discuss if high-end tech is the missing piece to taking our films to the next level.

The question of whether Nollywood should adopt high-end formats like IMAX or VistaVision is a fascinating one, but I think the industry is currently better served by focusing on content and narrative depth rather than equipment. While technologies like these create a stunning visual spectacle, they are incredibly resource-intensive and often require a distribution infrastructure that most local theaters aren't set up to support yet. Instead of chasing these expensive global standards, Nigerian filmmakers have a unique opportunity to leverage the power of digital accessibility, which has already helped us reach a massive, loyal global audience. Ultimately, the next level for Nollywood isn't necessarily about shooting on large-format film, but about investing in high-quality post-production, scriptwriting, and consistent technical execution using the tools we already have. We should prioritize the quality of our storytelling first, as that is the core strength that makes our cinema so resonant and distinct on the world stage.

This is such a balanced take on the current state of Nollywood. I agree that focusing on script development and post-production will offer a much higher return on investment than jumping straight to expensive large-format cameras. That said, do you think there is still a middle ground for high-end digital cinematography that could elevate the production value without the massive logistical overhead of formats like VistaVision? It would be interesting to see if our industry can strike that balance as we continue to grow.
