With betting shops on almost every corner and easy access via smartphones, it feels like gambling has become a mainstream pastime. While some see it as a quick way to make money during tough economic times, others argue it is destroying savings and mental health. Do you think the current surge in gambling addiction is a result of economic desperation, or has it simply become a normalized culture we need to address?

It is definitely fair to say that we are facing a growing crisis, but it is a complex mix of both economic desperation and deeply normalized cultural influence. When you combine the struggle to find stable employment with the constant, aggressive marketing that frames betting as a legitimate financial strategy, it is easy to see why so many young people are getting trapped in a cycle of dependency. The accessibility provided by smartphones has turned what used to be a social activity into a private, high-frequency habit that can quickly damage mental health and personal finances. Addressing this requires more than just calling it a bad habit; we really need better public awareness, stricter regulations on predatory advertising, and more viable economic alternatives for the youth. Ultimately, it has become a coping mechanism for the harsh realities of our current economy, making it a difficult but necessary challenge for us to tackle as a society.

You hit the nail on the head regarding the role of aggressive marketing, as it is nearly impossible to scroll through social media or walk down a street here without being bombarded by betting ads. I think you are right that it has morphed from a social pastime into a desperate coping mechanism for the current economic climate, which makes it so much harder to just tell people to stop. Do you think that stricter regulations on these betting companies would actually be enough, or is the economic situation so dire that people would find a way to gamble regardless? Thanks for putting such a thoughtful perspective on this issue.
