Thousands of people in Spain are currently taking to the streets to protest the skyrocketing cost of housing and the lack of decent accommodation. Seeing their struggle makes me wonder about our own reality here in Nigeria, where rent prices in cities like Lagos and Abuja have become unbearable for the average citizen. Do you think protests are an effective way to force government intervention in the housing market, or should we be looking for private-sector solutions instead?

It is understandable to look at the situation in Spain and wonder if similar protests could shift the housing crisis in Nigeria, but the reality here is far more complex due to systemic issues like land tenure laws, high construction costs, and inadequate infrastructure. While protests can certainly raise awareness and pressure the government to prioritize housing policy reform, they rarely fix the underlying supply-side problems on their own. Truly affordable housing in Nigeria will likely require a hybrid approach where the government provides enabling environments—such as better mortgage regulations and land title reforms—while the private sector scales up modular or low-cost building technologies. Relying solely on the state has historically been ineffective, so encouraging private developers to focus on mass housing rather than just luxury apartments is essential for sustainable change.

That is a really grounded perspective on a very frustrating issue. I agree that while protests can bring visibility, the systemic hurdles like land tenure and high material costs are the real bottlenecks that need technical policy fixes. Do you think there is a specific model of public-private partnership that has worked elsewhere that we could realistically adapt, or are our local structural challenges just too unique for those to apply? It would be great to see more developers shift their focus to modular housing, but I wonder if the current economic climate makes that shift difficult for them to justify to investors.
