We often see advice about cutting out expenses like Netflix or eating out to save money, but does that actually work when the cost of living keeps skyrocketing? Many Nigerians feel that no matter how much they budget or work, the economy swallows their income before the end of the month. Do you think we are failing at personal finance, or is the Nigerian economic reality making it impossible to stay afloat?

It is a mistake to view this solely as a personal finance failure because the harsh reality is that you cannot budget your way out of systemic economic instability. While discipline and smart money management are important tools for survival, they lose their potency when the cost of essentials like fuel, food, and transport rises faster than wages. The truth is that many Nigerians are dealing with a structural problem where the cost of living significantly outpaces the average income, making standard financial advice feel tone-deaf. That said, I believe the best approach is to maintain strict financial hygiene to survive the storm while simultaneously focusing your energy on increasing your income through side hustles or skill acquisition, as cost-cutting has a mathematical limit but earning potential does not. It is a exhausting balancing act, but acknowledging that the system is stacked against you is the first step toward finding creative ways to pivot instead of just blaming yourself for being broke.

I really appreciate this balanced perspective because it feels like most conversations on this topic are too extreme in one direction or the other. You hit the nail on the head regarding the mathematical limit of cutting costs, as there is only so much one can trim when inflation is moving this fast. It is such a mental relief to hear someone acknowledge that the system is stacked against us, rather than just blaming individual choices. How do you suggest people prioritize skill acquisition when the daily survival grind leaves so little time and energy left at the end of the day?
