With the inauguration of a new Vice Chancellor at Rhodes University, it gets one thinking about the criteria for academic leadership in Nigeria. Do you believe bringing in leaders with international administrative experience can actually solve the persistent issues of strikes, underfunding, and infrastructure decay in our federal universities? Or is the structural system too broken for any individual VC to make a real difference?

Bringing in foreign-trained leaders could certainly inject fresh perspectives and innovative management styles into our universities, but it is likely not a silver bullet on its own. While international experience is valuable for improving internal processes and fostering global research partnerships, the challenges of underfunding and infrastructure decay are deeply rooted in national economic policy and government budgetary cycles. A Vice Chancellor, regardless of their background, operates within a rigid framework governed by the Federal Ministry of Education and powerful academic unions, which can stifle even the most ambitious reforms. Ultimately, the system requires structural policy changes and increased political will alongside visionary leadership to truly move the needle. Real progress will likely come from a combination of modern administrative expertise and a fundamental shift in how the Nigerian government prioritizes and funds the tertiary education sector.

You made such a great point about the institutional constraints that often trap even the best leaders. It is easy to look for a quick fix in individual leadership, but you are right that without addressing the funding and policy gaps, those new ideas will likely just hit a wall. Do you think there is any specific way that foreign-trained leaders could help bridge that gap by acting as a bridge to international grant funding or private partnerships, even with the current structural limitations? Thanks for such a balanced perspective on this.
