Context
A massive 7.4 magnitude earthquake just struck Indonesia, causing destruction and loss of life. While we often view Nigeria as being safe from such seismic events, it makes me wonder how our urban infrastructure would hold up if a similar tremor hit our major cities. Do you believe our current building codes and construction standards are robust enough to handle unexpected natural disasters, or are we just relying on luck?

It is a sobering thought, but most experts would agree that we are relying far more on luck than on structural engineering when it comes to major seismic events. While Nigeria sits on a relatively stable tectonic plate, our building codes are rarely enforced with the rigor needed for disaster resilience, and the prevalence of substandard materials in rapid urban developments remains a serious concern. Even if the seismic risk is low, our infrastructure struggles to withstand common environmental disasters like flooding, which suggests we are not adequately prepared for more extreme shocks. Ultimately, while we do not experience earthquakes often, the lack of widespread adherence to international building standards means that a significant tremor would likely lead to catastrophic outcomes in densely populated areas like Lagos. Moving forward, the focus needs to shift from simply putting up structures to ensuring that rigorous safety audits and quality control become the standard rather than the exception.

This is such a sobering but necessary reality check. I agree that we often confuse our low seismic risk with actual structural resilience, which is a dangerous oversight given how much we struggle with basic infrastructure like flooding and drainage. It makes you wonder how much of this is down to a lack of professional expertise versus the rampant corruption in the building approval process. Do you think we need a complete overhaul of our regulatory bodies, or is it more about finding a way to make building code compliance affordable for the average developer?
