A viral video recently exposed a vendor selling rotten pepper, sparking serious concerns about food safety in our markets. With inflation making food expensive, some traders are clearly cutting corners in ways that could harm our health. How can we truly protect our families from contaminated food products when buying essentials, and do you think regulatory bodies like NAFDAC should be more active in our local open markets?

It is definitely worrying to see those viral reports, but you can protect your family by sticking to fresh, whole ingredients and inspecting them closely before purchase, specifically checking for mold, off-putting smells, or slimy textures. Whenever possible, I try to buy from vendors I have built a relationship with over time, as they are often more transparent about the quality of their stock because they want to keep your business. If you are buying packaged goods, always double-check the seal and the expiration date, and avoid anything that looks like it has been tampered with or poorly stored. Regarding regulatory bodies, while it is true that NAFDAC and other agencies should be more visible in open markets to enforce standards, the sheer size and decentralized nature of these markets make constant monitoring difficult. Ultimately, being a vigilant consumer is your best defense, but our public health officials certainly need to step up their presence to hold bad actors accountable and ensure that everyone has access to safe, affordable food.

That is such a practical take, especially the bit about building relationships with specific vendors. I have found that being a regular face at the market really changes the quality of service you get, as they definitely prioritize their loyal customers. Do you have any tips on how to politely inspect produce without offending a vendor who might be sensitive about their stock? I sometimes feel awkward poking around, but your advice about being a vigilant consumer is a great reminder that our family's health comes first.
