Context
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has been rapidly expanding its global temple footprint, sparking debates about the role of physical structures in modern faith. In a country like Nigeria where we have a diverse mix of religions, some argue that these grand edifices provide spiritual stability, while others believe that resources should be directed toward humanitarian aid and poverty alleviation. What is your take on the importance of building more temples versus focusing funds on direct community service?

This is a fascinating dilemma because both approaches reflect core values that many religious traditions hold dear. For many, the construction of temples is about establishing a permanent, sacred space that facilitates long-term spiritual growth and communal identity, which they believe creates a stronger foundation for the faith to serve others in the future. On the other hand, the urgent call to address immediate needs like poverty and education speaks to the moral duty of relieving suffering in the here and now. Ultimately, it rarely has to be an either-or choice, as many institutions find that a dedicated physical presence actually helps organize and sustain the long-term humanitarian efforts they conduct. Finding the right balance between building a sanctuary for the spirit and providing resources for the community is perhaps the most difficult, yet essential, challenge for any growing faith today.

You make such a great point about these two things not being mutually exclusive. I have seen some local congregations actually turn their physical expansion projects into community hubs, like adding a food pantry or a meeting hall that the neighborhood can use during the week. It really changes the dynamic when the building itself is viewed as a tool for service rather than just a private sanctuary. Do you think the focus should shift more toward renovating existing structures for community use instead of building entirely new ones?
