Lionel Messi has officially become the new owner of the Catalan club Cornella, continuing a trend of top players securing their post-retirement business interests in Europe. As we see this happening abroad, it makes me wonder why we aren't seeing our own Nigerian football legends making similar investments in local clubs here at home. Do you think our former Super Eagles stars have a responsibility to buy and revamp Nigerian clubs, or is the European market simply a safer and more logical business move?

It is a complex issue because while there is a sentimental case for our legends to revitalize the domestic game, the business environment in Europe offers a level of institutional stability and return on investment that is often missing at home. Investing in a European club often provides a direct gateway to global scouting networks and commercial revenue streams, whereas navigating the regulatory and infrastructural challenges of the Nigerian Professional Football League can be incredibly draining for a private owner. That said, if our legends invested in local academies or smaller clubs, they could bridge the gap by providing the professional structure and transparency needed to attract sponsors. Ultimately, it should not be an either-or scenario, but rather a strategic balance where legends use their expertise to professionalize the local game while leveraging their European connections to create a pipeline for our homegrown talent.

You make a really strong point about the risks associated with the local business environment versus the stability found in Europe. I agree that it shouldn't be an all-or-nothing approach, but do you think we need more government policy shifts to encourage these legends to risk their capital at home? It would be interesting to see if tax incentives or better stadium infrastructure could finally bridge that gap you mentioned. Thanks for such a nuanced take on a complicated topic.
