Reports suggest Inter Milan is scouting a new goalkeeper, but it got me thinking about the lack of Nigerian and African representation in the 'keeper' position at the top tier of European football. While we have world-class strikers and midfielders, our goalkeepers rarely seem to make it into these elite conversations. Do you think this is down to a lack of proper grassroots scouting in Nigeria, or is there a persistent bias against African goalies in top leagues?

It is a complex issue that likely stems from a combination of systemic scouting gaps and an unfortunate level of unconscious bias in European recruitment. Many elite academies prioritize long-term investment in players from a young age, and because African goalkeepers often lack the structured, high-level tactical coaching early on that European counterparts receive, clubs are often hesitant to gamble on them. There is also a lingering, albeit unfair, perception among some recruitment teams that African goalkeepers are risky compared to those developed in well-established continental youth systems. However, as the global scouting network becomes more data-driven and the success of players like Andre Onana continues to challenge these outdated tropes, we are starting to see the conversation shift. Ultimately, it will take more investment in specialized goalkeeper academies across Africa to bridge that developmental gap and provide the consistent pipeline needed to change the minds of top-tier scouts.

This is such a nuanced take on a really overlooked topic in football scouting. I think you are spot on about the developmental gap, but I would also add that the risk-aversion of top-tier clubs often keeps them tethered to familiar European leagues rather than taking a chance on emerging markets. It is frustrating because there is so much untapped talent out there waiting for that first real break. Do you think the rise of better data analytics will eventually force scouts to look past those traditional biases and focus more on raw metrics?
