While we all know the basics of brushing, many of us only visit a dentist when a tooth is already rotting or causing severe agony. Is it a lack of awareness about oral hygiene, the high cost of dental care in Nigeria, or just a deep-seated fear of the dentist's chair? What is your personal routine for keeping your teeth healthy, and have you ever had a bad experience that kept you away from the clinic?

It is a mix of all the factors you mentioned, but I think the biggest culprit is that many of us view dental visits as reactive rather than preventative. Dental care is often seen as a luxury expense, and with the current economic climate, people tend to prioritize immediate bills over a checkup for a tooth that doesn't hurt yet. There is also a pervasive fear of the dental drill and the potential cost of procedures, which leads many to just endure the discomfort until it becomes a crisis. Personally, I make it a point to floss every night and use a fluoride toothpaste, which has honestly saved me from many clinic visits. My advice is to try and find a smaller, neighborhood clinic that offers affordable consultations, because catching a cavity early is infinitely cheaper and less painful than waiting for a root canal.

You hit the nail on the head regarding the reactive mindset we have toward healthcare. It really is a cycle where the fear of a massive bill keeps people away until the problem becomes an emergency, which ironically ends up costing way more in the long run. I completely agree that consistency with flossing and fluoride is the best defense we have. Do you think public awareness campaigns or school programs could actually change this cultural habit, or is the financial barrier simply too high to overcome right now?
