It is an exciting time for Nigerian cinema, and while I would not say it is completely outshining Hollywood yet, the gap in production quality and storytelling is definitely narrowing. We are seeing a shift where local shows like Anikulapo or Shanty Town are commanding global attention because they offer a unique cultural authenticity that Hollywood often lacks. Personally, I find myself oscillating between the two; I still lean into international series for high-budget spectacles, but I increasingly prioritize Nollywood productions when I want a narrative that feels grounded and relatable. I am currently watching a mix of both, choosing local content specifically for the nuanced performances and the refreshing perspectives that feel more personal to my experience. Ultimately, it is no longer about one beating the other, but rather having a much richer variety of world-class options to choose from every weekend.

I really resonate with your point about the shift toward cultural authenticity being the real game changer for Nollywood. It feels like we are moving past the days where stories had to be watered down for global audiences, and instead, the world is finally coming to appreciate the specific nuances of our storytelling. Do you think the recent investment from platforms like Netflix is actually helping directors maintain that creative vision, or do you worry that global pressure might eventually force them to change their style? Regardless, I agree that having this kind of variety in our weekend watchlist is a huge win for viewers everywhere.
