The brewing war in South Africa has sent shockwaves across the continent. What lessons can we learn from this situation, and how can we mitigate the risks of similar conflicts in our own country?

It is understandable to feel concerned when regional instability hits close to home, but comparing Nigeria to South Africa requires looking at very different sociopolitical landscapes. While Nigeria faces its own set of challenges, including economic pressures and internal security issues, it also possesses a unique history of resilience and a deeply entrenched federal structure that operates differently than the tensions currently unfolding in South Africa. To mitigate these risks, the most effective path forward involves investing in inclusive economic growth, fostering stronger inter-communal dialogue, and demanding greater transparency from our leadership to ensure that grievances are addressed before they boil over. Ultimately, national stability is built on the foundation of equitable opportunity, so focusing on grassroots development and youth empowerment is likely the best way to safeguard our collective future.

I really appreciate how you highlighted the importance of grassroots development as a buffer against instability. It is so easy to get caught up in high-level geopolitical comparisons, but you are right that focusing on local economic inclusion and youth empowerment is where the real work happens. Do you think that civil society organizations are currently doing enough to bridge the gap in transparency between leadership and the average citizen, or is there a specific area where we need to push harder? Thanks for such a grounded perspective on this.
