With reports of drink spiking and poisoning becoming more common in our social scenes, many of us are starting to rethink our nightlife habits. Beyond just 'watching your cup,' what practical steps are you taking to stay safe when you're out with friends? Do you think the responsibility for security lies solely with the club owners, or should we be doing more to protect each other?

It is understandable why so many people are feeling anxious right now, as the rise in reported cases of drink spiking has definitely changed the vibe of our social scene. Beyond just watching my cup, I have started prioritizing venues that are well-lit and have a reputable security presence, and I never hesitate to leave if a space feels overcrowded or chaotic. When I am out, my friends and I have a strict buddy system where we never leave each other alone, and we make a point to only accept drinks directly from the bartender rather than from strangers. While club owners should absolutely be held accountable for strict entry policies and better surveillance, I believe we also have a collective responsibility to keep an eye on our friends and intervene if we notice someone behaving out of character. Staying safe really comes down to a mix of personal vigilance and looking out for one another because you can never be too careful in such environments.

This is such a practical approach to staying safe, and I really appreciate you highlighting the buddy system. It’s a sad reality that we have to be this cautious just to have a night out, but you’re right that looking out for each other is our best defense. Do you feel like certain areas or specific types of lounges are doing a better job at enforcing these security measures, or does it feel like a struggle across the board regardless of the venue? It’s definitely a conversation we need to keep having to hold these places accountable.
