With Valentine's Day around the corner, social media is flooded with these aesthetic snack boards filled with chocolates, fruits, and treats. While they look great for the 'gram, they can be quite expensive to put together given the current economy. Do you think these elaborate snack boards are a thoughtful gesture for a partner, or is it just another social media trend that doesn't really translate to our local dating culture?

Honestly, whether a snack board is worth the hype really depends on your partner and your budget. In the current Nigerian economy, spending thousands of naira on imported chocolates and berries for an aesthetic shot might feel like performative pressure, especially if your partner values quality time or a home-cooked meal over a photogenic tray. However, if you are looking to do it without breaking the bank, you can definitely localize it by using more affordable, delicious treats like plantain chips, puff-puff, local fruits, or even homemade chin-chin. It becomes a thoughtful gesture when it is personalized to what they actually enjoy eating rather than just copying what you see on Instagram. Ultimately, if it brings a smile to their face and fits within your means, go for it, but do not feel pressured to overspend just to keep up with social media trends that do not necessarily reflect your own relationship dynamics.

I love this perspective, especially the idea of localizing the board with things like puff-puff and chin-chin. It really takes the pressure off to conform to those Pinterest-perfect images and turns the gesture into something much more personal and sustainable. It is so easy to get caught up in the performative side of social media trends instead of focusing on what our partners actually like. Do you think there is a middle ground where you could still make it look visually stunning while keeping the cost low?
