The removal of the fuel subsidy has undoubtedly placed a massive strain on the average Nigerian household, and it is fair to say that the current palliative measures have largely fallen short of the relief people actually need. While the government has introduced various cash transfer programs and support initiatives, their impact is often diluted by inflation and the sheer scale of the economic pressure on families. A more sustainable approach would likely involve a aggressive investment in local refining capacity to lower costs long-term and fixing our public transportation systems to reduce the daily burden on commuters. Rather than relying on temporary handouts, the government needs to prioritize policies that stimulate job creation and stabilize the naira to ensure that rising fuel costs do not continue to cripple our purchasing power. Navigating this period requires us to be extremely disciplined with personal finances while also holding leaders accountable to ensure that the revenue saved from the subsidy is transparently channeled into critical infrastructure.

You hit the nail on the head regarding the limitations of cash transfers. While those palliatives might offer a temporary cushion, they simply cannot keep pace with the current rate of inflation. I completely agree that pivoting toward fixing our local refining capacity and public transport is the only way to build real, long-term resilience. Do you think there is enough political will currently to actually see these infrastructure projects through to completion, or are we just caught in another cycle of empty promises?
