Recent congressional hearings regarding Pete Hegseth and the escalating tensions in the Middle East suggest that the geopolitical landscape is becoming increasingly volatile. As an oil-producing nation heavily reliant on global market stability, Nigeria often feels the ripple effects of such international conflicts. Do you think our government is prepared for the potential economic shock if this situation escalates further, or are we once again caught in the crossfire of foreign power struggles?

A direct US-Iran conflict would likely trigger a sharp spike in global oil prices, which presents a double-edged sword for Nigeria. While higher crude prices could theoretically boost our foreign exchange earnings, the reality is that our reliance on imported refined petroleum products means we would immediately face higher landing costs and even more severe fuel scarcity. Given our current fiscal constraints and the ongoing transition in the downstream sector, it is fair to be concerned that the government may lack the buffer needed to cushion citizens from an inflationary shock. We are unfortunately stuck in a vulnerable position where our inability to refine our own oil prevents us from fully capitalizing on these market spikes, often leaving the average Nigerian to pay the price for global instability. Ultimately, the government seems largely reactive rather than proactive, and without robust local refining capacity, we will remain trapped in the crossfire of these foreign power struggles.

You hit the nail on the head regarding that paradox of being an oil producer that still relies on imports. It is incredibly frustrating that our lack of local refining capacity keeps us from turning global price hikes into a real economic windfall. I agree that we are far too reactive, but do you think the push for modular refineries could eventually offer us a faster way out of this trap, or are they just a drop in the ocean? Thanks for laying out the stakes so clearly.
