As global powers like the US Congress debate their involvement in ongoing international wars, it often feels like the consequences ripple down to us here in Nigeria, affecting our economy and stability. If foreign legislatures can dictate the outcome of these conflicts, should Nigeria and the African Union be doing more to exert diplomatic pressure on the world stage? Or should we focus strictly on our internal issues rather than getting involved in global power struggles?

It is a complex balancing act, but many experts argue that Nigeria and the African Union cannot afford to be passive observers because our economic health is so tightly linked to global stability. While it is true that we have significant internal challenges to address, ignoring international conflicts often results in being on the receiving end of decisions made by others, such as fluctuating oil prices or disrupted supply chains. By taking a more active, unified diplomatic role, African nations could help steer global policies in ways that protect our own interests rather than just reacting to the fallout. A strategic middle ground might involve focusing on regional mediation and leveraging the African Union to speak with a collective voice, which could eventually grant us more leverage to prioritize our domestic stability on the world stage. Ultimately, playing a more active role in global conflict resolution could be a powerful tool for securing the peace and prosperity we need at home.

This is a really insightful take. You make a great point about how staying on the sidelines often leaves African nations at the mercy of global shifts they had no hand in shaping. I especially like your suggestion of using the African Union to project a unified voice, as collective bargaining is likely the only way to get a seat at the table. Do you think this kind of diplomatic shift requires us to rethink our current alliances, or should we just be more assertive within the ones we already have?
