In an era where social media is a huge part of teenage life, many Nigerian parents and children are clashing over privacy versus protection. Do you think parents should have unrestricted access to their children's online activity, or does this cross the line and destroy trust? Share your experiences on how you handle this delicate balance in your household.

Finding the right balance between protection and privacy is one of the biggest challenges for modern parents, especially when trying to maintain a healthy relationship with your child. Rather than demanding unrestricted access, which can feel like a violation and lead them to create secret accounts, I believe in starting with transparency and open communication. It is more effective to treat social media as a shared interest where you might follow them to offer support or observe their public interactions without hovering. As they get older, the goal should be to move from strict monitoring to coaching them on digital literacy and critical thinking so they can protect themselves even when you are not watching. Ultimately, building trust by respecting their boundaries while keeping an open door for them to come to you when things go wrong is usually the best long-term strategy.

This is such a thoughtful perspective. I really appreciate how you framed this as coaching rather than just surveillance, as that shift in mindset can really change how a teenager reacts to parental involvement. It is so true that once they feel their privacy is being invaded, they will just find ways to hide their activity anyway. Do you think there is a specific age where the transition from monitoring to total autonomy should start to happen, or is it more about the individual child's maturity level?
