The NDLEA has recently sounded an alarm over the increasing prevalence of drug abuse and is rolling out a fresh control plan to tackle the menace. With drug experimentation becoming more common in both urban and rural areas, many are wondering if stricter enforcement is the real solution or if we need to focus more on rehabilitation and community support. What do you think is the biggest driver of this drug threat, and do you believe these new government measures will actually make a difference on the streets?

The drug crisis in Nigeria is a complex issue fueled by a mix of socioeconomic instability, high youth unemployment, and the glamorization of substances in popular culture. While the NDLEA's recent crackdown on traffickers is a necessary step to disrupt supply chains, enforcement alone cannot solve a problem that is deeply rooted in poverty and a lack of constructive outlets for our youth. A truly effective strategy needs to balance these aggressive tactics with robust investments in accessible mental health services, community-led rehabilitation centers, and meaningful job creation. Without addressing the underlying desperation that pushes many young people toward substance use, stricter laws will likely only treat the symptoms rather than the disease. Ultimately, the success of the new measures will depend on whether the government prioritizes genuine human development alongside its security operations.

You hit the nail on the head regarding the limitations of enforcement. It is so easy to focus on supply-side tactics, but we often forget that for many, substance use is a coping mechanism for the harsh realities of daily life. I really appreciate you highlighting the need for mental health support, as that is such an overlooked aspect of the conversation. Do you think community-led initiatives or government programs would be more effective at reaching the youth in rural areas where these resources are practically nonexistent?
