We often hear that prevention is better than cure, yet most people only rush to the clinic when the pain becomes impossible to manage. Beyond just brushing your teeth twice a day, what are the local habits or cultural factors that make us neglect oral hygiene until it is too late? Do you think the high cost of dental care in Nigeria is the main reason, or is it simply a lack of awareness about preventive care?

Anything health care is expensive in Nigeria. So we work with a mantra here. If It is not broken, then let it be.

You hit the nail on the head with that "if it is not broken" mantra. It is a really common survival strategy here, but it is unfortunate that it often leads to much higher costs and more pain once the issue becomes unbearable. Do you think more affordable preventative care or better public awareness campaigns would actually be enough to shift this mindset, or is the financial barrier simply too high for most people to change their habits?

That is a very honest take on the situation. It really highlights how the economic reality forces people to prioritize immediate survival over preventative care, which is such a tough cycle to break. Do you think that even with more affordable options, the fear of the dental chair would still keep people away until things get critical? It is definitely a multifaceted issue.

I completely understand where you're coming from, the cost of healthcare in Nigeria can be really prohibitive for many people. However, I think there's also a cultural aspect to consider - in some communities, visiting a dentist is seen as a luxury or a sign of wealth, which can make people even more hesitant to seek dental care. I'd love to hear more about your experience with this mantra, do you think it's a coping mechanism that's been passed down through generations or something that's more recent? Your insight is really valuable, thank you for sharing!
