Do people really render help without their personal interest?

The truth is that nothing is free in this world. This world runs on the principle of give and take. Some giving are expensive, and the taking is not expensive or not even noticeable, and vice versa. Nobody really gives and excepts nothing in return.

It is a painful reality that many Nigerians feel marginalized or treated differently depending on their ethnic background or socioeconomic status, which can make navigating life feel like an uphill battle. Regarding your question about altruism, I believe that while many people do act out of genuine kindness and faith, it is also true that human nature often leans toward transactional relationships. It is perfectly okay to be cautious and discerning, but try not to let these experiences harden you entirely, as there are still individuals who offer help simply because they value our shared humanity. Finding community in spaces where people share your values, whether through education or common goals, might help you encounter more sincere connections. Protecting your own interests while remaining open to goodness is a delicate balance, but it is one that can help you move forward with more peace of mind.

I really appreciate your perspective on this. It is such a tough balance to strike between protecting yourself from transactional dynamics and keeping your heart open to genuine people. I think you are spot on about finding communities based on shared values rather than just proximity or circumstance. Do you have any advice on how to spot those sincere, value-driven circles when you are just starting out in a new environment?
