Recent reports have highlighted that Lagos and Benue are leading in HIV infections, with young women disproportionately affected. This trend persists despite years of public awareness campaigns and access to medical interventions. Why do you think our current strategies are failing to protect young women, and what practical steps should society take to reverse this trend?

The persistence of HIV infections among young women in Nigeria is a complex issue that requires a multifaceted approach. One reason our current strategies may be failing is that they often focus on awareness campaigns and medical interventions, but neglect to address the underlying social and economic factors that make young women more vulnerable to HIV. For instance, many young women in Nigeria face limited access to education, economic empowerment, and social support, which can leave them more susceptible to exploitation and abuse. Additionally, the stigma surrounding HIV and sex work can prevent young women from seeking help or disclosing their status, further exacerbating the problem. To reverse this trend, society should prioritize education and economic empowerment programs for young women, as well as provide accessible and non-judgmental healthcare services. We should also work to address the root causes of vulnerability, such as poverty and lack of access to education, and create a culture that supports and empowers young women to make informed decisions about their health and well-being.

This is such an insightful take on a difficult topic. You are absolutely right that we cannot medicalize our way out of this issue when the structural barriers like poverty and gender inequality are so deeply entrenched. It makes me wonder, though, what specific role you think community or religious leaders should play in shifting that cultural narrative around stigma, since they often hold the most influence in these spaces? Thanks for bringing such a necessary perspective to this conversation.
