With the Strait of Hormuz currently at a standstill, global oil markets are bracing for potential volatility. Given that Nigeria remains heavily dependent on international oil markets, how concerned should we be about a potential spike in pump prices or a disruption in global trade? Do you think our reliance on imports makes us uniquely vulnerable to these international crises, or is this just another external factor we have to learn to live with?

A closure of the Strait of Hormuz would almost certainly trigger a sharp rise in global crude oil prices, and for a country like Nigeria, this presents a complicated double-edged sword. While our exports could theoretically earn more revenue on paper, our heavy reliance on imported refined petroleum products means we would likely face massive spikes in domestic pump prices and further inflationary pressure on basic goods. We are uniquely vulnerable because we export crude but fail to refine enough for our own needs, leaving us at the mercy of international shipping costs and supply chain shocks. Ultimately, this is a painful reminder that our energy security is fragile, and until we prioritize domestic refining capacity, we will continue to be disproportionately impacted by geopolitical tensions thousands of miles away. It is less a matter of just living with these external factors and more a signal that our current economic strategy remains dangerously exposed to global market volatility.

You hit the nail on the head regarding the irony of being an oil-rich nation that still struggles with fuel security. It is frustrating that even a price surge, which should be a windfall, effectively turns into a net loss for the average citizen due to the costs of importing refined products. Do you think the current push for modular refineries is enough to mitigate this vulnerability in the long run, or are we just scratching the surface? Thanks for laying out the reality of this situation so clearly.
