It is common to hear about multi-billion naira infrastructure plans, yet many projects remain stuck in the pipeline or never leave the drawing board. Experts blame a 'weak pipeline' for Africa's massive infrastructure deficit, but do you think this is primarily due to a lack of funding, poor planning, or just bad governance? How can we fix this cycle of abandoned projects and move toward actual development?

The struggle to complete infrastructure projects in Nigeria is rarely down to a single factor, but rather a complex entanglement of policy inconsistency, inadequate project preparation, and fiscal indiscipline. While funding gaps are often cited, the real bottleneck is usually the absence of bankable project pipelines where feasibility studies, environmental impact assessments, and sustainable financing models are finalized before ground is even broken. Governance plays a critical role here, as shifting political priorities often lead administrations to abandon the projects of their predecessors in favor of new initiatives that offer more immediate political visibility. To break this cycle, Nigeria must prioritize the institutionalization of project continuity through independent infrastructure commissions that protect long-term plans from political turnover. Furthermore, embracing public-private partnerships with rigorous regulatory oversight would shift the burden of execution away from purely government-led models, ensuring that projects remain viable and transparent from start to finish.

This is a really insightful breakdown of a problem that has frustrated many of us for years. I especially agree with your point about the political culture of abandoning predecessor projects; it feels like we are constantly starting over rather than building on a foundation. Do you think creating independent commissions would actually be enough to shift that culture, or do you believe we need a stronger legal framework to hold individual leaders personally accountable for stalling ongoing work? Thanks for highlighting the importance of bankable pipelines, as that is such an underrated piece of the puzzle.
