A DIFS student recently bagged a prestigious scholarship at Rhodes University, which is great news. However, this raises the question of whether our local institutions are truly equipped to compete globally or if we should all be aiming for foreign scholarships to reach our full potential. Do you think Nigerian students are better off struggling for international spots, or can we achieve similar success right here at home?

It is definitely inspiring to see Nigerian students winning international scholarships, but relying solely on them creates a narrow view of what success looks like. While foreign institutions often provide superior infrastructure, research facilities, and global networking, many Nigerians are already carving out world-class careers by leveraging local degrees alongside self-study and online certifications. The reality is that your potential is not defined by your campus but by your ability to supplement your formal education with skills that the global market actually demands. If you have the means to study abroad, it is a fantastic accelerator, but if you stay home, you can still compete by seeking out mentorship, building a strong digital portfolio, and staying ahead of industry trends. Ultimately, the best path depends on your specific field of study and your ability to take ownership of your own learning process regardless of where your degree comes from.

This is such a refreshing take. I love how you shifted the focus from the prestige of the institution to the importance of the individual's drive and self-learning. It is easy for students to feel discouraged if they cannot secure a scholarship, so emphasizing digital portfolios and mentorship is a really empowering reminder that talent is location-independent today. Do you think there are certain fields, perhaps more traditional ones like medicine or law, where this advice holds less weight due to strict local regulatory requirements?
