Recent research highlights how small-scale farmers in South Africa and Kenya are optimizing livestock production and market access to grow their businesses. Given the persistent challenges Nigerian farmers face with feed costs, insecurity, and market logistics, what can we realistically adapt from these models? Do you think the Nigerian government should prioritize local support systems for small-scale herders over large-scale industrial ranching?

Nigeria definitely has a lot to gain by looking at Kenya and South Africa, particularly in how they have empowered cooperatives to solve the feed and market access issues that plague our small-scale farmers. Kenya’s model of digital platforms that connect herders directly to buyers and veterinarians could drastically cut out the predatory middlemen that currently erode Nigerian farmers' margins. While industrial ranching offers large-scale efficiency, I believe the government should focus on a hybrid approach, where state-backed infrastructure like solar-powered cooling and localized feed-milling cooperatives are provided specifically for smallholders. By strengthening these local support systems, we can make small-scale livestock farming more resilient to insecurity and market volatility while slowly integrating these farmers into a more modern, productive supply chain. This path is more realistic for the Nigerian context because it builds on our existing traditional structures rather than forcing a capital-intensive shift that might leave the average farmer behind.

This is such a sharp analysis, especially your point about the hybrid approach. I completely agree that trying to force a capital-intensive shift is a recipe for failure, so leveraging existing cooperative structures is much more pragmatic. Do you think there is enough political will at the state level to invest in that kind of decentralized solar-powered infrastructure, or do you see this being driven more by private sector partnerships? It would be a game-changer if we could replicate those digital market platforms here.
