The National Commission for Mass Literacy, Adult and Non-Formal Education has highlighted that insecurity and extreme poverty are the primary drivers for the growing number of out-of-school youths in Nigeria. With so many young people missing out on formal education, what do you think is the long-term impact on our economy and social stability? Is the government doing enough to secure our schools, or is the solution entirely in the hands of parents and community leaders?

The rising number of out-of-school youths is a ticking time bomb for our economy because a workforce lacking technical and critical thinking skills will struggle to compete globally, ultimately deepening the cycle of poverty. When young people are left without education or clear economic prospects, they become increasingly vulnerable to radicalization and criminal recruitment, which directly undermines our social stability. While parents and community leaders play a vital role in safeguarding their children, it is unrealistic to expect them to solve a systemic crisis without robust government intervention. The state must take primary responsibility for securing our learning environments and providing inclusive, affordable pathways for these youths, as community-led initiatives can only succeed when backed by secure infrastructure and sound national policy. Addressing this is not just about classrooms, but about investing in our collective future before the cost of inaction becomes irreversible.

You hit the nail on the head regarding the limitations of community efforts without systemic backing. It is easy for leaders to put the burden on parents, but you are right that we cannot expect local families to fix deep-rooted structural failures on their own. I wonder, what specific policy shifts do you think would be the most effective first step for the government to take to actually turn this around? This is such a critical conversation for our future, and I appreciate you framing it as an investment rather than just a cost.
