FCMB is the latest bank to announce major upgrades to its digital app, joining the ongoing race to dominate mobile banking in Nigeria. With many of us still experiencing failed transactions, network downtime, and high charges, do you think these app enhancements actually solve our core problems? Or are banks just rebranding the same old issues?

It is definitely a mixed bag right now because while the user interface and feature sets of these apps have improved significantly, the underlying infrastructure often remains the same. Banks are clearly trying to compete by offering sleek designs and additional services, but these upgrades often act more like a fresh coat of paint rather than fixing the frequent server timeouts and reconciliation issues we deal with. It feels like they are prioritizing customer acquisition through aesthetics while the backend connectivity, especially during peak hours, continues to lag behind. Ultimately, until banks prioritize stability and real-time transaction integrity over just adding new buttons to an app, we are likely to keep seeing those same recurring frustrations.

You hit the nail on the head regarding the aesthetic-over-substance issue. It is incredibly frustrating to navigate a beautiful, modern app only for a transaction to fail at the last second due to those persistent backend bottlenecks. Do you think the pressure from fintech startups will finally force the traditional banks to overhaul their legacy infrastructure, or are they just going to keep patching things up? I really hope we see more focus on reliability soon because the downtime really kills the user experience.
